Papua New Guinea new stamp release information leaflets

Peter To Rot Beatification 1995

As a collector of Papua New Guinea postal stationary, particularly first day covers, pre-stamped envelopes and souvenir covers, I recently became aware of the information leaflets that accompany official FDCs and new stamp releases. They appear to be rare, as many of the FDCs purchased by the author in recent years did not include them. This may  be due to low numbers printed and the fragility of the items. It appears they may only have been supplied through standing order accounts, and not over the counter.

Official, generic FDCs first appeared in 1952 with the initial issue of a set of Papua New Guinea definive stamps. The cover, in both small and large sizes, featured a black and white image of a man in a headdress. It supplemented the privately produced covers which had been available since the 1920s. The first non-generic, special purpose FDC accompanied with the 1962 Traffic Policeman stamp release. In the interim, and through to 1964, a small number of generic FDC were utilised and can be seen here

The information leaflets printed during this early period included monocolour and multicolour illustrations, both on the cover and inside the leaflet. On some occasions more then four pages were used, and staples were required. The leaflets were issued for both definitive and commemorative releases, and inserted within the official first day covers. They remain a feature of PNG stamp releases up to the present day. Below is a list of some examples of interest.

1961

The earliest leaflet to be identified appeared with the Legislative Council release of 10 April 1961. It featured on the front the following: Territory of Papua and New Guinea / [Australian coast of arms] / Department of Posts and Telegraphs. Different fonts and arrangements of the three elements were used on subsequent leaflets, along with coloured inks and ornamentation. Inside was a reproduction of the stamps and relevant information about the content and printing details. This format would be repeated into the future. References to first day cover released prior to 1969 are taken from Franklin ....
