Alice in Wonderland
Cinema, TV and Video representations
Compiled by Michael Organ
Lewis Carroll's two books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) have been presented in numerous film and television versions over the years since 1903 when Percy Stow and Cecil Hepworth's 9 1/2 minute black and white silent film was released in Britain. Below is a list of the known major filmic, television or video productions of Alice's adventures, compiled from a variety of online and published sources. Some of these are patchy, not complete and of low quality, whilst others are highly detailed. A star rating out of 5 is given for each film, where the version has been seen by the compiler - the rating is primarily based on adherence to the original Carroll texts, quality of the production and the compiler's personal taste. Numerous sites also list aspects of the various filmic versions:
- Matt Patches, The Mad History of Alice in Wonderland, UGO, March 2010.
- Fiona, Alice in Wonderland Through the Ages, Filmfilia, March 2010.
- Kenneth Rougeau, Alice in Wonderland: A Cinematic History, Uncommon Nonsense: news from the world of Wonderland, September 2010.
- Internet Movie Database. Lists most versions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Alice in Wonderland, or What's a nice kid like you doing in a place like this US. Dir: Alex Lovey. Cheshire cat voice - Sammy Davis Jnr. NBC. According to blog kerrytonz: "Alice in Wonderland (or What's a Nice Kid Like You Doing in a Place Like This?) is a one-hour animated TV-movie, produced by Hanna-Barbera, and broadcast on the ABC network on March 30, 1966. This adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland differs from most others in a number of ways; e.g., Alice falls into a TV set instead of a rabbit hole. Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble appear in this movie as a two-headed caterpiller, and Hedda Hatter (a new character) is a female counterpart of the Mad Hatter. Rexall and Coca-Cola sponsored this feature, and characters from the movie appeared in the Rexall commercials. After the movie was broadcast, Hanna-Barbera Records put out a soundtrack album, which is currently out of print. Although Sammy Davis, Jr. supplied the voice of the Cheshire Cat in the movie, the song What's a Nice Kid Like You Doing in a Place Like This? was performed on the album by Scatman Crothers, due to the fact that Davis was under exclusive contract to Reprise Records at the time. Alice father is played by Richard Denning, who played Lucille Ball's spouse on radio's "My Favorite Husband" and lost Deborah Kerr to Cary Grant in the movie "Affair to Remember." The Emmy-winning costumes were co-created by Bob Mackie. Moose Charlap, who wrote most of the music for the Broadway "Peter Pan," did the same for this. The score includes the "Backwards Alphabet," which was also recorded as a single by Soupy Sales. The score from the special was also released on RCA Records on vinyl. Colour, film, 1.18.15 minutes.
