A Chronological Bibliography

Introduction

The following chronological bibliography of published and unpublished material features the work of Australian artist Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888-1960). It is a supplement to the extensive illustrated listing available at the Ida Rentoul Outhwaite - Queen of Fairyland website. The bibliography was compiled from a variety of sources, including Marcie Muir's A Bibliography of Australian Children's Books (Andre Deutsch, London, 1970), I.F. McLaren's Whitcombe's Story Books - A Trans-Tasman Survey (University of Melbourne Library, 1984), Marcie Muir and Robert Holden's The Fairy World of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (Craftsman House, Sydney, 1985, 171p), various bookseller listings available on the internet and disparate sources such as eBay and an anonymous collector of Outhwaite material (refer Acknowledgements below). The list has been developed over a number of years, and the process is ongoing. For example, during March 2007, an early (circa 1907) postcard featuring a coloured drawing by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite of two Koalas on a tree was offered for sale on eBay and subsequently sold for $660Aus - it had not previously been noted in any of the aforementioned bibliographic sources and is therefore included below. More recently, in June 2016 Bonhams auction house in London offered for sale a collection of drawings and manuscript for an unpublished work entitled Hoppity's House.

This web page is a brief, descriptive bibliography and individual references have been abbreviated to aid in comprehension. It contains around 500 entries, ranging from descriptions of minor illustrations issued singularly or in association with verse or music, through to postcards, glossy magazine covers and on to substantive monographs. Minor biographical notes are included within the bibliography and indicated with an asterisk [ * ]. Where publications with identical titles have been reprinted, such is also indicated, though these may comprise entirely new editions or a new or updated suite of illustrations by the artist. It should be noted that Outhwaite used various names throughout her career, including the following (arranged chronologically): Ida Sherbourne Rentoul, Ida Sherbourne Outhwaite and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. She signed her artworks accordingly, both with initials (e.g. I.S.R., I.S.R.O or I.R.O) or in full. Preference within this bibliography is given to the latter, where appropriate. Throughout this bibliography square brackets are used thus [....] to provide title and other descriptive information where none is available from within the individual publication. For example, many of the listed books and pamphlets from the first half of the twentieth century do not include a date or place of publication, therefore indicative guesses are included based on library acquisition records, contemporary reviews and the like. A similar problem arises in identifying the various editions and/or reprints of works. For more precise bibliographic information researchers are referred to the catalogues of the major Australian libraries and to the aforementioned texts, though all are limited in some way in their scope. For example, library catalogues generally do not reference magazine articles or ephemera, concentrating instead on books and journals. Muir & Holden (1985) is the most comprehensive publication to date dealing with the artist's output and the circumstances surrounding the many publications she was associated with during her lifetime.

Acknowledgements

In the compilation of this listing I would like to acknowledge the work of Marcie Muir and Robert Holden (listed in the bibliography below), and the assistance of various library catalogues such as those of the State Library of New South Wales and the Victorian State Library. I would also like to thank a number of correspondents, most especially an anonymous collector of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's work from Ida's home town of Melbourne. Anyone with particularly rare or unlisted items or variations, please contact the compiler of this list, with details for adding to the bibliography. A version of this site in the Dutch language has been translated by Sandra Knudsen and is available on her Wissenschafts-Blog here.

1926

Fairyland, prospectus, Ramsay Publishing, Melbourne, 1926.

Fairyland of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite / verses by Annie R. Rentoul, stories by Grenbry Outhwaite and Annie R. Rentoul. Ramsay Publishing, Melbourne, 1926. L5.5. Deluxe edition, signed by artist. Some copies came in a slip case. 166p. 1st print. A (cheaper) edition is also known, with light-blue variant cover, no signature, no tissue papers on colour plates and no slip-case. Fairyland was meant to be limited to 1000 signed copies, as stated on the limitation page with Ida's signature. However, we have never seen a signed copy with a number higher than 600. It seems likely that around 600 deluxe editions were bound first and then when this expensive book failed to sell very well, the remaining pages were bound more cheaply in the light-blue variant cover. So there were probably about 200-400 of the cheaper version made...meaning that although they are not quite the same quality as the proper deluxe edition, they are actually much harder to find. In our experience they are very rare, perhaps the number made is more like 100-200. Ida's previous deluxe edition numbered only 300 and prior to that, 500...and Fairyland was a much more expensive book. There are also a few proper deluxe edition printings that are not numbered and not signed. Some deluxe are signed, but not numbered. Some are signed by Ida and Annie, but not numbered, perhaps gifts to friends. We have seen the light-blue version not signed, but with numbers, including numbers above 800...but they could have been added in more recent times and almost certainly not in Ida's hand, unlike the proper deluxe. Ida's 1916 Elves and Faires, of which there were 1500 printed, has sold for up to A$10 000. Fairyland seems to sell for A$3000-A$5000...and yet there is almost certainly far less than 600 proper deluxe in existence and almost all were signed by Ida, unlike Elves & Faires, where only a handful were signed. Also, Fairyland has far more colour illustrations and was printed using much better methods, meaning that most copies are in much better condition than Elves & Faires. Especially the tissue papers, which are far more resilient than for Elves & Faires. Fairyland is under-estimated and possibly deserves to be THE most sought-after Australia children's book.

Benjamin Bear [cartoon] / written and drawn by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, The Weekly Times, Melbourne, 18 February 1933 - 26 August 1939. Cartoon strip. There were 341 Benjamin Bear comic strips. They present the greatest challenge for any collector of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's published works. The Benjamin Bear comic was ended abruptly on 26th August 1939. The following week on 2nd September, "Benjamin Bear" was replaced with "Tim Tyler" and a small mention was made on the children's page that Benjamin was "taking a holiday". Unfortunately he never returned. The story did not get the chance to wind up and in fact a wonderful new character "Scotty", the Scotch Terrier, had just been introduced, he was trapped on a remote island with "Johnny" the kookaburra. They had just met and the title of the very last Benjamin Bear comic was "New Friends". Benjamin himself had not appeared for many weeks. What story did Ida have in mind next ? Are there unpublished original comics out there somewhere that take the story a little further?
