1. Introduction

The Polish explorer, scientist, diplomat and spy Paul (Pawel) Edmund Strzelecki is an enigma. Though he was a very public figure, he declared in his will that all his personal papers be destroyed. As a result, his is something of a mystery, and the only records we have of him of a personal nature are the few surviving items of correspondence with others, of comments about the man published in newspapers during his lifetime, or following his death in 1872 personal reminiscences by those who knew him. Many of these letters and comments are scattered throughout hard to locate publications and those few biographical texts that he been produced. As a result, the present writer felt the need to bring together any such letters to or from Strzelecki, and other relevant personal assessments of his work and character. These are reproduced below, chronologically from oldest to most recent.
