In search of Goldberry

Goldberry. Artist: Hildebrandt.

Goldberry is the partner of Tom Bombadil in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (Tolkien 1951-4). Neither appeared in the Peter Jackson filmed trilogy (Jackson 2001-3), nor are they much known about outside of the realm of Tolkien fandom. Yet both Bombadil and Goldberry are important characters in the book, with their inclusion deemed important by the author, who nevertheless made them both rather enigmatic. I have elsewhere addressed the issue of Tom Bombadil in some detail (Organ 2020). However, this blog will attempt to consider Goldberry in similar detail, though to a lesser extent as Tolkien did not write as much about her as he did about Tom. In regards to Goldberry the questions arise: Who was she? What was she? And what exactly did Tolkien write and say about her? Answers lie within the authors publications, letters and reports of conversations. As such, they are presented below in chronological order, followed by a summary consideration of what they tell us. A detailed reference bibliography is also included.
