1. Postage Paid Australia
The words Postage Paid Australia, or an earlier equivalent such as Paid at Sydney, have appeared on letters and parcels posted in Australia since the earliest days of centralised, official postal services in the second half of the nineteenth century when stamps first appeared (1 January 1850) and prior to the proclamation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 through federation of the various states.

In 2026 the words can be seen as postmarks, on blank envelopes, postcards, maxicards, aerogrammes, stamped envelopes, a variety of Australia Post covers, as gummed or sticky labels, in machine printed forms, and as individual stamps with, of course, no designated currency. The very definition of postage paid implies the absence of any preset application of a specific denomination. The variety of postal stationary bearing those words, or variants, is substantial, and has increased in recent decades as online purchases take over the previous role of letters as the primary task of postal delivery services. The present writer, as a longtime collector of postal stationary such as pre-stamped envelopes and souvenir covers, noted during the late 1990s the demise of the use of the latter by Australia Post to commemorate events. In its place were new, more financially viable, philatelic collecting forms such as postal numismatic covers (PNCs), prestige covers, and, most interestingly though not primarily revenue generating, Postage Paid Australia stationary in the form of envelopes, aerogrammes and maxicards. IN some instance, the PNCs were also postage paid, non-denominational.

| Postage Paid Australia postal numismatic cover (PNC), 13 June 2019. |
Australia Post pre-paid envelopes (PPE) - usually indicated by Postage Paid Australia text in the top right corner either singularly, in the body of a printed stamp, or next to a printed stamp - have primarily existed as generic or definitive postal items issued over extended periods of time and going back to the 1960s. Some bore machine-printed postmarks, as illustrated in the example above from 1965. As far as the present writer is aware, only since 1990 have PPEs been utilised to commemorate or celebrate specific events, organisations or individuals. This need was usually accommodated by first day covers - when issued with a specific stamp or set of stamps; un-stamped souvenir covers; pre-stamped envelopes, to which category they theoretically remain; or in more recent times as postal numismatic covers (PNC), and limited edition Prestige Covers. With this wide variety of used for the Postage Paid Australia label, it is no wonder that they have become somewhat lost to the collecting fraternity as an individual, specific group of postal stationary. The present article attempts to correct that.
In February 2026 the present writer noted in the Australia Post Stamp Bulletin #400 a Postage Paid Australia PPE celebrating fifty years of Probus. This item could be classified as a commemorative or souvenir PPE, and not simply a generic item or other type of non-commemorative PPE cover. As such, it was noted as not common. Whilst it is described herein and elsewhere as a PPE, it could also be listed as a souvenir cover, though the general definition of such covers by Noel G. Almeida does not include PPEs which, though often not stamped as such and therefore not included in his definition, nevertheless bear a pre-paid postage label or statement which is non-denominational. Those souvenir / commemorative PPEs identified by the present author are listed below. A selection of the numerous non-commemorative PPEs are also listed. Some of the non-commemorative PPEs were issued under the Christmas Island banner, an Australian territory, whilst nevertheless bearing the Postage Paid Australia label. They mostly relate to envelopes issued in connection with celebrations around Christmas and the Chinese new year designation, such as Year of the Dragon.
Within the present article the PPE designation refers to a number of variants, such as the International Post PPE which has that text upon the pre-printed stamp and is listed by Australia Post as an International Postage Page Envelope (IPPE); and postage prepaid aerogrammes, which are not envelopes as such but are nevertheless included in the commemorative PPE section where appropriate. A variety of postal stationary which happen to bear Postage Paid Australia stamps (pre-printed or attached) and text are not included in the lists below, such as PNCs, maxicards, postcards, and bulk stationary labels. Details of these can be found in the various published and online listings of that category of Australia Post stationary, though in many instances the items are rare, as is usually the case with "non-collectable" postal stationary not advertised in publications such as the Stamp Bulletin. In compiling the following list, the writer has accessed available Stamp Bulletins from 2007; prior examples have yet to be searched and any identified have derived from sources such as eBay and online dealer listings. Some PPEs have also been issued as Prestige cover or with an embroided badge. These limited edition and expensive items have not been listed here. They are often included in PNC listings.

2. Commemorative PPEs
The earliest official "Commemorative PPE" (as referred to by Australia Post) tentatively identified by the present writer dates from 1990, though its status has not been confirmed. Further research will possibly uncover earlier examples, as the earliest set of non-commemorative PPEs dates from 1989. The writer has not, to date, identified any consolidated listing of modern-era PPEs elsewhere, though in dealer listings from, for example, Sydney Philatelics, select items can be found amongst listings such as those of pre-stamped envelopes and first day covers. It would appear that PPEs are a little known branch of collecting in Australian philatelic circles, perhaps a victim of the proliferation of variety of such services offered by Australia Post in the new millennium. All the items listed below are official, unless otherwise indicated as status unconfirmed. Their status is usually derived from mention in the Stamp Bulletin.
